CFO Jimmy Patronis Applauds Governor DeSantis for Signing Financial Literacy Bill
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Today, Florida Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jimmy Patronis issued the following statement on Governor DeSantis signing Senate Bill 1054, Financial Literacy. This bill requires Florida high school students earn at least one-half credit of instruction in financial literacy or money management and will teach students about banking practices, money management, credit scores, managing debt, loan applications, insurance policies and local tax assessments.
CFO Jimmy Patronis said, “As Florida’s CFO and the father of two, I’ve seen firsthand the importance of teaching our kids financial literacy at a young age. It is critical we set Florida students up for financial success. Thank you to Governor DeSantis for signing this important measure to ensure vital financial literacy resources are available to Florida students. Financial literacy is an important key to a strong financial future and I’m proud that learning the basics of credit, budgeting, savings, and investing will now be taught throughout Florida’s schools. These lessons are also critical to training future generations of Americans to appreciate America’s capitalist system and grow our nation’s pool of entrepreneurs. Thank you to Senator Hutson and Representative Busatta Cabrera for their hard work on getting this legislation passed and setting students up for success in and out of the classroom.”
Senator Hutson said, “I was proud to champion Senate Bill 1054 this legislative session and fight for Florida’s students to ensure they are set up for financial success. Thanks to Governor DeSantis, students will now learn about bank accounts, how to open them up and how to manage them. Before graduation they will know about the difference between credit scores and credit card debts and how to do leases and basic contracts. A huge thank you to Governor DeSantis and to CFO Patronis for ensuring this good bill crossed the finish line.”
Representative Busatta Cabrera said, “Thank you to Governor DeSantis for signing Senate Bill 1054 today and to CFO Patronis for being such a strong supporter of financial literacy. Whether our students are headed to one of our great colleges or universities, a valuable trade or apprenticeship program, the military or career in the arts, every single one of them deserves to be equipped with the education and information on how to succeed and thrive financially in our society.”
