CFO Jimmy Patronis Offers ‘Be Scam Smart’ Workshops for Florida Seniors and Caregivers

11/4/2019
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In recognition of National Family Caregivers Month, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jimmy Patronis is highlighting his Operation S.A.F.E. “Be Scam Smart” workshops for seniors, their family and caregivers. These presentations help inform, empower, and protect Florida’s seniors from financial scams and fraud. Seniors and caregivers can register for an upcoming workshop or request a workshop in your area today.

CFO Jimmy Patronis said, “Florida currently ranks first in fraud and fourth in identity theft nationwide and all too often it’s our seniors who are targeted by scam artists looking to make a quick buck. My Be Scam Smart workshops empower caregivers to make informed financial and insurance-related decisions for the people they care for, and themselves. It’s vital that Florida’s seniors and their caregivers know how to spot fraudulent behavior, recognize the common types of scams that target seniors, and how to fight identity theft. The best defense against fraud and scams is knowing the warning signs before becoming a victim.”

3 Tips for Seniors & Caregivers to Avoid Scams

1. Don’t always trust caller ID. Scam artists often use technology to make their phone calls look like a legitimate government agency or business. If you receive an unsolicited phone call hang up and call them back at a phone number you can verify.
2. Ask for assistance. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Always talk with a trusted family member or friend before making any major financial decision. Always remember to verify before you buy.
3. Don’t be bullied. Don’t ever feel rushed by high-pressure sales tactics to act now before you miss your chance. This is a red flag that the offer may not be genuine.
