CFO Jimmy Patronis' Accelerant Detection K-9 Catches Arsonist

PANAMA CITY, Fla. – CFO and State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis today announced the recent arrest of Derrick Eady following an investigation utilizing an accelerant detection K-9 on charges of arson to an occupied structure after allegedly setting fire to the house.

CFO and State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis said, "My office’s highly trained dogs complete intensive training and are key in assisting our arson detectives and local law enforcement across the state. Arson is a dangerous crime which can be both costly and deadly. Bringing those to justice who intentionally set fires is all in a day’s work for our canines."

The Springfield Police Department responded to the structure fire located at 204 Helen Avenue on February 22, 2019. Shortly thereafter, detectives and accelerant detection K-9 Ginger were requested to the scene to investigate the cause, origin and nature of the fire.

During the investigation, detectives determined the fire was intentionally set to the exterior of the north wall near the power meter where a slight odor of gasoline was present. K-9 Ginger positively confirmed  the presence of an ignitable liquid accelerant and alerted detectives to the suspected area of origin.

Eady was on scene at the time and denied any involvement or being around the presence of gasoline in the past several days. Eady consented to have K-9 Ginger go over the clothes that he was wearing at the time and she alerted detectives to the gloves, wristband and shoes that Eady had been wearing as well as the pants that Eady was seen wearing at the time of the fire. He faces one count of arson of an occupied structure and if convicted, could face up to 25 years in prison.
