CFO Jimmy Patronis Announces Arrest in $34,000 Miami Insurance Fraud Scheme

MIAMI, Fla. - Today, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jimmy Patronis announced the arrest of Trevor Lawrence Taylor on charges of Insurance Fraud, Scheme to Defraud, and Grand Theft for his alleged involvement in an insurance fraud scheme including falsifying receipts and fabricating invoices to defraud Tokio Marine Insurance Company out of more than $34,000.

CFO Jimmy Patronis said, "It’s simple: if you commit fraud in the state of Florida, you’re going to be caught and held accountable. Fraud drives up insurance costs and discourages insurance companies from doing business in Florida. My fraud detectives work around the clock to ensure fraudsters are brought to justice and fraud schemes are uncovered to protect Florida policyholders. Thank you to our fraud investigators for making this arrest and protecting Florida consumers.”

On March 22, 2020, Trevor Lawrence Taylor falsely reported that the rear glass doors of his residence were vandalized and damaged due to a theft while under construction. An investigation by the Division of Investigative and Forensic Services, Bureau of Insurance Fraud (DIFS) revealed that Taylor allegedly conducted a systematic scheme which involved lying about the causes of damage to the property, including using fabricated invoices and receipts, as well as inflating the value of damage and repairs. Evidence showed the glass doors were accidently damaged by the contractor's foreman while operating a forklift. Taylor asked the contractor to replace the glass doors and provide an invoice for the cost to file an insurance claim, then pay him from the claim's money. The contractor completed the repairs and provided Taylor a receipt of more than $11,000 for the doors and installation. Instead of submitting an accurate claim, Taylor fabricated multiple receipts and altered the original invoice to show an inflated amount of $34,275.00. This inflated amount was enough to cover his policy's deductible, pay his contractor, and then pocket the remaining difference of roughly $13,400.00.

Trevor Lawrence Taylor was arrested on March 10, 2023, and was booked at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. If convicted on all charges, he could face up to 20 years in prison.
