CFO Patronis Announces $12.2 Million Unclaimed Property Settlement with State of Delaware, MoneyGram
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Today, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jimmy Patronis announced the State of Florida has secured a portion of a $157 million settlement with the State of Delaware following an unclaimed property dispute regarding funds abandoned by MoneyGram Payment Systems, Inc. Under the terms of the settlement, Delaware will transfer more than $12.2 million of the funds that MoneyGram reported to Delaware from 2011 to 2017 to the State of Florida. Following a Supreme Court decision in 2023, CFO Patronis wrote a letter to the State of Delaware demanding the return of millions of dollars held in the form of unclaimed property that belongs to residents of Florida. The property includes proceeds from financial instruments that, according to the Supreme Court decision, should have been allocated to the state where the instrument was purchased. Since 2017, CFO Patronis’ Division of Unclaimed Property has returned more than $2.5 billion to Floridians.
CFO Jimmy Patronis said, “This is a huge win for Floridians who will now have the opportunity to recover $12.2 million in unclaimed funds that have been locked away for roughly 20 years. Delaware had no right to these funds and, once officially remitted to Florida, we will work quickly to return every penny to the rightful owners who’s funds were lost after doing business with MoneyGram. The Supreme Courts findings in this case also set a valuable precedent to protect the unclaimed assets of Floridians going forward. Thank you to the legal teams at the Attorney General’s Office and the Department of Financial Services, our team at the Division of Unclaimed Property, and the dozens of other states who fought diligently on behalf of their consumers to recover and return these unclaimed funds.
“I encourage all Floridians to visit FLTreasureHunt.gov now to search for unclaimed property for you, your loved ones, and even your business. An estimated 1 in 5 Floridians has money just waiting to be claimed.”
Floridians who believe they may have unclaimed property stemming from a transaction with MoneyGram prior to 2010, please visit Delaware’s Unclaimed Property website to search their database HERE.
