Each Hurricane Michael Insurance Village provides an opportunity for area residents having insurance issues to meet directly with their insurance company. CFO Jimmy Patronis said, “Nationally, the average family shopping for K-12 students is expected to reach nearly $700. As we near the start of a new school year in the Sunshine State, I encourage Floridians to take full advantage of the 2019 Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday this weekend to stock up on new school clothes, certain supplies, and technology items up to $1,000. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity for back to school savings."
During the sales tax holiday, qualifying items will be exempt from tax including: certain school supplies selling for $15 or less per item; and clothing, footwear, and certain accessories selling for $60 or less per item; and computers and certain accessories selling for $1,000 or less per item, when purchased for noncommercial home or personal use.

Today, Governor Ron DeSantis signed CS/CS/SB 426: Firefighters, granting certain benefits to a firefighter upon receiving a diagnosis of cancer. Nationwide, 70 percent of firefighter line-of-duty deaths in 2016 were cancer-related. With the signing of this legislation, Florida joins 45 other states that provide a cancer benefit to these first responders. The Florida Healthy Kids Corporation (Corporation) today celebrates that 2019-2020 fiscal year legislative budget negotiations have included funding for a proposal submitted by the Corporation to lower the cost of health insurance for families in its full-pay program. Families earning a household annual income above 200% of the federal poverty limit or $51,500 for a family of four are potentially eligible for the full-pay plan. This proposal eliminates costly $3,000 medical and $1,500 pharmacy annual deductibles, along with a 25% coinsurance requirement, for the nearly 15,000 children ages 5-18 who are currently enrolled in the Florida Healthy Kids full-pay insurance plan. Additionally, an estimated 146,000 uninsured children in Florida stand to benefit from this more affordable insurance option, which is set to become effective January 1, 2020.

Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jimmy Patronis announced today the arrest of Mary Bruce for alleged unlicensed practice of public adjusting and grand theft related to Hurricane Irma. Bruce attempted to steal more than $68,000 in fraudulent claims. This is Bruce's second arrest for insurance fraud this year. She bonded out of jail in January and was arrested again on separate charges.

Jorge Valido, a former Miami doctor and primary figure in the fraud scheme is still at large. Valido, who was previously indicted for healthcare fraud, and his associates are alleged to have stolen doctors' identities, illegally obtained insurance information and billed $42,742,852 in fraudulent medical services.
