CFO and State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis Announces Arrest of Alleged Ormond Beach Arsonist
4/4/2019
ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jimmy Patronis announced the arrest of William Schenkel for arson and aggravated assault after allegedly setting fire to a vehicle in Ormond Beach.
CFO and State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis said, “Thankfully, no lives were lost in this fire, but arson is a dangerous crime that can turn deadly in an instant. My dedicated arson detectives work diligently to bring criminals like this to justice before they strike again. You can rest assured that arsonists in Florida will be caught and they will be held accountable.”
On March 31, CFO Patronis' arson detectives responded to a vehicle fire on Linda Avenue at the request of the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office (VCSO). Based on the fire inspection, evidence, and witness statements, all accidental causes were ruled out and the fire was determined to be arson.
Two days after the fire, witnesses allege Schenkel said he was going to burn down a home on Linda Avenue "with everyone inside of it tonight." Schenkel also allegedly claimed the residents "will know they can't stay here and live."
William Schenkel was arrested on April 3 and transported to the Volusia County Jail on charges of arson and aggravated assault. If convicted, he faces up to 30 years in prison.
