CFO and State Fire Marshal Patronis: Take Precautions When Using Generators
PANAMA CITY, Fla. – As Tropical Storm Nate moves toward the U.S. Gulf Coast, CFO and State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis reminds Floridians of the importance of using gas-powered generators safely.
CFO and State Fire Marshal Patronis said, “When you are without power, generators can make life a lot more comfortable. However, if used improperly, generators can become dangerous and even deadly. After Irma, lives were tragically lost due to generator-related carbon monoxide poisoning, and I ask all Floridians to please use common sense and caution if Tropical Storm Nate knocks out the power.”
Floridians are encouraged to follow these important safety tips when using a generator:
• Only run a generator in a dry, well-ventilated area away from your home.
o Avoid running a generator near doors, windows, air vents, or AC units to avoid drawing in dangerous exhaust fumes.
o Running a generator on wet ground poses an increased risk of electrocution.
• Never run a generator inside your home or garage. If not properly ventilated, dangerous and potentially deadly amounts of carbon monoxide can build up.
o Opening doors and windows will not generate enough air circulation to properly ventilate your home.
• Do not overload a generator. Never exceed a generator’s maximum wattage rating.
• Use UL-listed outdoor extension cords and properly ground a generator to help prevent electric shock.
• Never refuel a generator while it is running.
• Before shutting off a generator, turn off and unplug all devices connected to it.
