CFO Jimmy Patronis Announces Two Arrests in Orlando for $21,000 Travel Insurance Fraud Scheme

4/17/2019
ORLANDO, Fla. – Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jimmy Patronis announced the arrest of Alonso Hoyer and Maria Camero for allegedly submitting false travel insurance claims for a fake person. The claims resulted in more than $21,000 in payments for medical procedures that allegedly never occurred.

CFO Jimmy Patronis said, “Schemes like this cost Floridians millions every year as it drives up insurance prices for everyone just so scam artists can make a quick buck. Criminals get creative when it comes to scamming the system. We will continue to work every day to ensure Floridians are protected and to keep fraudsters off the streets.”

An investigation by CFO Patronis’ fraud detectives revealed that Hoyer and Camero allegedly secured a travel insurance policy and insured a fake person for up to $50,000 which covers certain medical related expenses. The travel insurance company received a telephone call from a “medical facility” in Colombia indicating that the policyholder was injured on vacation and required $21,658 for surgery. Further investigation not only discovered that the policyholder was fictitious but the “medical facility” was a corporation registered to Camero and used to obtain the fraudulent claim payments.

Camero was arrested at her residence on April 11 and booked into the Orange County jail. On April 12, Hoyer turned himself in at the Orange County Jail. Camero and Hoyer both face charges of scheme to defraud and grand theft. If convicted, they each face up to 45 years in prison.
