TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Today, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jimmy Patronis announced the appointment of Renee Oliver to the Florida Birth-Related Neurological Injury Compensation Association (NICA) Board of Directors. This past legislative session, CFO Patronis submitted many reforms to the Legislature regarding the efficiency with which NICA fulfills its obligations to provide medical care to children with the NICA program. As a result, the Legislature passed SB 1786, which became law July 1, 2021, 766.315(1), Florida Statutes. Additionally, the new law made changes to the board of directors, increasing the board from five to seven members with qualifying attributes. One of the new positions is a parent or legal guardian of an injured infant participating in the NICA plan.

As a member of NICA for more than 13 years, she will bring tremendous real-life experience to the board of directors and her insight and point of view will be an invaluable asset. These families will forever deal with challenges, but thanks to Governor DeSantis, President Simpson, Speaker Sprowls, Senator Burgess, and Representative Koster, they will get more relief and support that they so badly deserve. I sincerely appreciate Ms. Oliver’s willingness to serve the state of Florida and the families who participate in the NICA program.”

Oliver, of Deland, has been a member of the NICA program for more than 13 years and has devoted herself to learning about the program and seeking benefits offered to families in order to care for her son. While being committed to his safety and well-being, she became certified as an EMT and a Hyperbaric Technician. She has also taken the initiative to assist other families with the processes for reimbursements and payments for therapy and equipment. Oliver will serve on the NICA Board of Directors representing parents and legal guardians of NICA plan participants. Her term is effective immediately and expires on June 30, 2024.
