CFO Jimmy Patronis: Federal Law Follows Florida's Lead, Makes it Easier to Protect Against Identity Theft and Fraud

9/24/2018
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.— Florida Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jimmy Patronis today released the following statement on the implementation of a new federal law removing fees associated with consumer credit freezes.

“This year, one of my top priorities was to remove the fee imposed on Floridians to freeze their credit. It was signed by Gov. Scott and is now a law in our state. Florida has led the charge on making it easier for our residents to protect themselves against identity theft and fraud. I am pleased that the federal government has followed our lead and implemented this important consumer protection nationwide.

“Florida is a top state for consumer fraud, and ranked second for identity theft reports in 2017. We know one of the best ways to protect yourself from fraud is to freeze your credit. Now consumers nationwide can contact the three major credit reporting bureaus to apply a credit freeze cost free.”
