CFO Jimmy Patronis Hosts Call with Florida Insurance Companies Regarding Hurricane Dorian Response

8/30/2019
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jimmy Patronis and Insurance Commissioner David Altmaier held a call with insurance company executives today and urged them to be ready to meet Floridians’ needs immediately following Hurricane Dorian.

CFO Jimmy Patronis said, "Floridians in the Panhandle are still dealing with insurance claims for a storm that made landfall nearly 11 months ago. This is unacceptable and the insurance industry must act swiftly to help those impacted by Hurricane Dorian. I expect each insurance company keep their promise to their customers and pay claims quickly. We are already planning on activating insurance villages after the storm and each company must deploy teams that can help handle claims. I continue to encourage consumers to reach out to their insurance agent, carrier or my Insurance Helpline first following any disaster."

Commissioner David Altmaier said, “We are still recovering from Hurricane Michael and now Florida is faced with another powerful storm in Hurricane Dorian. I have told the insurance companies doing business in our state that I expect them to quickly respond to policyholders affected by the storm. They must respond to and assess damage quickly and pay claims efficiently.”

The top 25 insurance companies, which account for a large portion of the market in the potential impacted areas, were invited to participate in the call. Topics included: post-storm insurance villages, deployment of fraud prevention strike teams and contacting CFO Patronis' Insurance Helpline at 1-877-MY-FL-CFO.

CFO Patronis confirmed that there are nearly 135,824 licensed adjusters and 230,244 insurance licensees who can legally adjust claims in Florida.

Following the full impact of Hurricane Dorian insurance companies will be required to report daily claims information. Consumers who have questions about policy coverages or need help filing a claim can call Florida’s free Insurance Consumer Helpline at 1-877-MY-FL-CFO (693-5236) or visit PrepareFL.com.
