**CONSUMER ALERT**

CFO Patronis: Don’t Fall for Facebook Marketplace Scams

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Today, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jimmy Patronis is warning Floridians to stay alert and beware of Facebook Marketplace scams. With social media becoming a popular place to buy and sell used items, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) is offering tips on how best to avoid Facebook Marketplace scams. Additionally, the Federal Trade Commission states that nine out of ten victims of online shopping fraud claim to be defrauded using Facebook or Instagram in 2021.

CFO Jimmy Patronis said, “Facebook Marketplace scams are running rampant right now with fraudulent vendors trying everything they can to take your hard earned money. From advertising fraudulent rental homes that aren’t for sale to selling defective and counterfeit goods, these types of scams are on the rise and we must do everything we can to protect consumers. I recommend buying products from nearby vendors only and if you feel pressured to make a deal, don’t be afraid to be afraid to back out.  As I have said time and time again, if an offer sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. I encourage all Floridians to stay on guard, trust your senses and avoid any transaction that even remotely raises suspicion. If you or someone you know is suspicious of fraudulent activity, report it immediately at FraudFreeFlorida.com.”

Tips to Avoid Facebook Marketplace Scams:

  • Payment: Pay with PayPal or Facebook Checkout because you will be covered under Facebook’s purchase protection policy.
  • Location: Meet the seller in person in a public area and do your research so you can easily spot counterfeit products.
  • Research the seller: Check the seller’s profile for negative reviews and avoid newly created pages.

If you or someone you know is suspicious of fraudulent activity, please report it immediately at FraudFreeFlorida.com.
