The Florida Department of Financial Services (DFS) and the Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR) are working to assist consumers navigate their health insurance coverage issues in the wake of the outbreak of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

OIR has spoken with multiple insurers who are voluntarily waiving cost-sharing for consumers in an effort to remove barriers to testing for COVID-19. If you require testing or treatment, call the company Customer Service number on the back of your identification card for additional information. This number is the fastest and best way for you to obtain specific coverage information based on the insurance contract you have with your health insurance provider.

Governor DeSantis’ Executive Order 20-52 authorizes pharmacists may dispense up to a 30-day emergency prescription refill of maintenance medication to persons who reside in Florida. OIR has issued reminder of Florida law regarding early prescription refills to all health insurers, health maintenance organizations and other health entities authorized to do business in Florida.

Travel Insurance Information

As a result of the COVID-19 outbreak and the preventative measures that have been implemented to combat its spread, a wide variety of advice and/or warnings related to travel have been issued to individuals from a number of different governmental and industry sources.

Many people may opt to cancel or postpone travel plans as a result of personal concerns or due to government directives. Shown below is basic information about travel insurance if a policy is being considered or purchased:

Standard travel insurance policies do not typically cover trip interruption or cancellation caused by the threat of viral infections. Such policies usually exclude coverage for cancelation due to an epidemic, pandemic, or similar public health event.
If an individual purchased “Cancel for Any Reason” coverage in conjunction with a standard travel insurance policy, there may be coverage in the event the individual wishes to cancel a trip in an abundance of caution, and not because an actual illness prevented travel.
The only way to determine whether an individual's travel insurance policy affords coverage is to closely examine the contract, and to have a clear understanding of the reason(s) the individual cancelled or wishes to cancel their trip.
If the individual's trip involves travel via an airline, many air carriers have implemented very liberal fight cancellation, postponement, or rescheduling rules. An individual may wish to contact the airline directly to determine that particular air carrier's cancellation policy.
