Unauthorized Life Insurance Policy

The Department of Financial Services received a complaint from a consumer whoe received a letter regarding a new life insurance policy that he did not apply for. The policy documents had several inaccuracies including the consumer's address and the policy beneficiary was listed as his spouse when they were unknown to him. The company canceled the policy in response to the Department's inquiry. Insurance Agent Scams Consumer Into Health Insurance Policy

The Department of Financial Services received a report of a Leon County woman who felt she was scammed into agreeing to a new and unneeded health insurance policy after being approached by an insurance agent claiming to work for her insurance company. The consumer has insurance through her employer but the agent said he could get her a discount on her plan and took her information. He did not contact her again and when completing her taxes she found the information had been used to open a policy in her name. Fradulent Marketplace Policy Enrollment with Suspicious Voice Consent Recording

The Department of Financial Services received a report from a consumer that he was signed up for a Marketplace policy without his consent. He already has insurance through his union policy, and has not spoken with any agents. The insurance agency provided an audio recording of consent which included several oddities and may have been an AI impersonation. Senior on Medicaid Enrolled in Unauthorized Marketplace Plan

The Department of Financial Services received a report that a Volusia County senior citizen was enrolled in an unauthorized Marketplace policy even though she was already on Medicaid. The enrolling documents contained multiple inaccuracies, and was unable to provide documentation of consent for the policy enrollment. The policy was later terminated and the insurance agent was given a Notice of Action letter. Passport Processing Scam in Pinellas

Consumers have reported that scammers are falsely claiming to represent FedEx and offering to process passport applications. Customers are being charged online for passport processing and then being directed to visit the Pinellas Clerk's office for an acceptance agent signature and document review without the required consent form or proof of travel itinerary. Consumers should always verify any information received from the clerk's office is legitimate by contacting the office directly. Customers who notice a suspicious passport application or website or who have paid a scammer are encouraged to report it to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
